Canada 150 was an astounding success, and Canadians were happy to take part. It turns out, much of the world came to join us in the milestone birthday. Canada broke its own tourism record with 20.8 million visitors travelling to the great white north in 2017.
Statistics Canada released preliminary data early this week that shows Canada has passed its 2002 tourism record by nearly a million tourists.
In a news release from the federal government, they say that 2017 saw a 4.4% growth in tourism from the previous year. It is a victory of investments put into Canada’s New Tourism Vision plan. The goal of The Vision is to continue to grow tourism by 30 percent by 2021 and have Canada reach the top 10 destination countries in the world by 2025.
“I am proud of the fact that we welcomed more than 20.8 million visitors to our beautiful country last year-a new record,” said Minister Bardish Chagger. “However, I know that we are only just beginning. Looking to the future, I am excited for what is still to come.”
2018 is Canada-China Year of Tourism which hopes to help Canada reach its goal of doubling tourists from China by 2021.
